A Critical Multimodal Analysis of gender construction in English textbooks published by PCTB

ABSTRACT: The primary objective of this study was to explicate the stereotypical construction of men and
women presented in English textbooks published by Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board
(PCTB). By employing mixed-methods approach, the framework of Multimodal Critical
Discourse Analysis (MCDA) was applied to study the nature of the gender-based stereotypes
present in the textbooks. MCDA is a hybrid framework that is based on Fairclough’s (1989) a
three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) model and Kress & Leeuwen’s (1996)
